How many Academy Awards did Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers win?

The story behind the answer

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers won two Academy Awards.

The 2002 film received six nominations at the 75th Academy Awards. It won for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. The visual-effects award recognized the digital creation of Gollum, whose performance combined Andy Serkis’s acting with computer-generated imagery and animation.

The Two Towers was the middle chapter of Jackson’s trilogy, adapting material from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Two Towers and parts of The Return of the King. Its Oscar haul was smaller than Fellowship’s four wins, but its effects work was especially influential.

The trilogy’s final film, The Return of the King, later achieved a record-setting sweep for the series by winning all 11 categories in which it was nominated.
