Approximately how wide is Victoria Falls, the Zambezi waterfall on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border?

The story behind the answer

Victoria Falls is approximately 1,708 metres wide across its Zambezi River gorge.

The waterfall stretches across the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the Zambezi plunges into a narrow series of gorges. Its extraordinary width, combined with a maximum height of about 108 metres, gives it one of the world’s largest sheets of falling water.

Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone saw the falls in 1855 and named them Victoria Falls in honour of Queen Victoria. The local Lozi name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means “The Smoke That Thunders,” referring to the spray plume and the roar produced by the falls.

The width does not mean the entire crest has identical flow throughout the year. Seasonal changes in the Zambezi’s discharge alter the amount of spray and the visibility of individual cataracts.
