Jack Thorne wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child from a story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne.
The play is set nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Its central characters include the adult Harry Potter and his son Albus Severus Potter, whose experiences at Hogwarts form the main dramatic focus.
The authorship credits can be confusing because Rowling contributed the original story and served as a producer, while John Tiffany directed the original production. Thorne wrote the stage script itself. The published script therefore identifies the work as “the original play by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne,” with Thorne credited as writer.
The play began previews in London in 2016 and won multiple awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. It was later published as a script rather than as one of Rowling’s seven original novels.
