What is the name of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding-world companion book about fairy tales?

The story behind the answer

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is J.K. Rowling’s companion book of wizarding fairy tales.

Within Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the book is left to Hermione Granger by Albus Dumbledore. Its stories include “The Tale of the Three Brothers,” which explains the origin of the Deathly Hallows and helps the heroes understand the final novel’s central mystery.

Rowling wrote and illustrated the original limited-edition manuscript in 2007. Only seven handmade copies were produced, with most sold to raise money for the Children’s High Level Group, the charity later renamed Lumos.

A commercial edition appeared in 2008 with commentary attributed to Albus Dumbledore. The title is sometimes shortened to Beedle the Bard, but the full published title begins with “The Tales of.”
