J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was her screenwriting debut and expanded the Wizarding World beyond the Harry Potter story.
The film is set decades before the main Harry Potter timeline and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1926 New York. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, while David Yates directed the film. Rowling also served as a producer.
The title comes from a fictional Hogwarts textbook attributed to Newt Scamander. Rowling had previously published a short charity companion book using that title in 2001, but the 2016 film tells a much broader original story.
Steve Kloves, who wrote most of the Harry Potter film screenplays, was not the screenwriter of this first Fantastic Beasts film. Rowling received the screenplay credit herself.
