Who won the women’s shot put at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham?

The story behind the answer

Jessica Schilder won the women’s shot put at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The Dutch thrower secured the title with a sixth-round effort of 20.73 metres. It was her third consecutive European outdoor championship gold medal in the event, extending a run that began at Munich 2022 and followed her victory in Rome in 2024.

Schilder competed despite a thumb injury, making the result especially notable. Her winning mark was described as the longest winning throw in the women’s shot put at these championships in the 21st century.

Jorinde van Klinken, also from the Netherlands, took silver, while Germany’s Yemisi Mabry won bronze. The same three athletes occupied the podium places in the same order as at the previous European Championships in Rome, making the Birmingham result unusually familiar.

The women’s shot put was the first final of the Birmingham championships to produce a gold medallist. Schilder’s victory therefore also made her the first individual champion of the meeting.
