Who won the women's figure-skating gold medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Anett Pötzsch won the women's figure-skating gold medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.

Pötzsch competed for East Germany and became Olympic champion in the singles event. Her performance followed a strong run in international competition and made her one of the leading female skaters of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The silver medal went to American skater Linda Fratianne, while West Germany's Dagmar Lurz took bronze. Because the event was held in the United States during the Cold War, the result is often remembered alongside the intense sporting rivalry of the period.

Pötzsch's Olympic title came four years after Dorothy Hamill's victory at Innsbruck and four years before Katarina Witt's triumph at Sarajevo. The 1980 competition used the traditional combination of compulsory figures, the short program and the free skate, a format later changed as compulsory figures were removed from major championships.
