Georg Hackl won the men's luge singles gold medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics.
Hackl represented Germany and successfully defended the title he had won at Albertville in 1992. His Lillehammer victory made him the first athlete to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same individual luge event.
The achievement is often confused with Armin Zöggeler's later Olympic record. Zöggeler won medals in six consecutive Olympic Games, but Hackl's distinction was three straight gold medals in men's singles, achieved in 1992, 1994 and 1998.
Luge is contested on a refrigerated track, with athletes racing feet-first while lying on their backs. Times are measured to very small fractions of a second, so steering and aerodynamic control are crucial. Hackl's nickname, “the Hackl-Schorsch,” reflected his status as one of Germany's most famous sliders.
