Who won the men's large-hill ski-jumping gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Kazuyoshi Funaki won the men's large-hill individual ski-jumping gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.

Funaki represented Japan and won with a total of 272.7 points. Germany's Dieter Thoma took silver, while Japan's Masahiko Harada won bronze. Funaki's victory came at the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium in Nagano Prefecture.

Funaki also won the normal-hill silver medal at Nagano and helped Japan win the team large-hill competition. His style received praise for its controlled landing and strong flight position, and he became one of the most celebrated Japanese ski jumpers of the Games.

The large hill was distinct from the normal hill, which used a smaller takeoff and landing profile. The two individual events awarded separate medals, so a jumper's result in one did not determine the other.
