Who won the men's alpine skiing combined gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Franz Pfnür won the men's alpine skiing combined gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics.

The combined event tested athletes in both downhill and slalom, making it an early Olympic measure of all-round alpine ability. Pfnür represented Germany at the Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where alpine skiing made its Olympic debut.

Pfnür's victory is sometimes confused with those of his German teammate Christl Cranz, who won the women's combined event at the same Games. The 1936 alpine program included separate men's and women's combined competitions, but it did not yet resemble the modern Olympic alpine schedule.

The 1936 Games were the first Winter Olympics to include alpine skiing. The sport later expanded to include events such as downhill, giant slalom, super-G and the modern combined format. Pfnür's result therefore belongs to the formative period of Olympic alpine skiing, before the event structure became standardized.
