Tomas Gustafson won the men's 10,000 metres speed-skating gold medal at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
The Swedish skater won in 14 minutes 23.59 seconds, finishing ahead of the Netherlands' Leo Visser and fellow Swede Claes Bengtsson. The race was held at the Olympic Oval, an indoor venue whose fast ice contributed to several world records during the Calgary Games.
Gustafson had already won the 5,000 metres at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. His Calgary victory made him one of the leading long-distance speed skaters of his era and gave Sweden a second consecutive Olympic title in the men's 10,000 metres. The 10,000 metres is the longest men's speed-skating event on the standard Olympic programme.
