Who won the first AFL Women’s premiership in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Adelaide won the first AFL Women’s premiership in 2017.

The Adelaide Crows defeated the Brisbane Lions in the inaugural AFL Women’s Grand Final at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast. Adelaide won by 35 points, with a final score of 4.11 (35) to Brisbane’s 4.0 (24). The result established Adelaide as the first premiers of the national women’s competition.

The AFLW began in 2017 with eight clubs. The competition was created to provide a national elite pathway for women’s Australian rules football and quickly expanded beyond its original group of teams. Early seasons used shorter matches and different list structures from the men’s AFL competition.

The inaugural Grand Final was played in front of a large national audience and helped give the women’s game a prominent place in Australian football. Adelaide’s premiership is distinct from later AFLW titles, because it was the first championship in the competition’s history.
