Which club won the 1977 VFL Grand Final replay after the original match was drawn?
Answer
North Melbourne
Answer
North Melbourne
North Melbourne won the 1977 VFL Grand Final replay after the original match was drawn.
North Melbourne and Collingwood drew the first 1977 Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 24 September. The teams finished level at 10.16 (76) apiece, requiring a replay one week later.
In the replay, North Melbourne won 9.22 (76) to 9.16 (70), securing the club’s first VFL premiership. The result was especially notable because North Melbourne had entered the competition’s top level only in 1925 and had never previously won a senior VFL flag.
The 1977 decider remains one of the best-known drawn Grand Finals in Australian rules football. It was also the last VFL Grand Final to require a replay; later drawn finals were resolved under different extra-time rules.
