The Gabba hosted the first AFL Grand Final played outside Victoria in 2020.
The 2020 Grand Final was moved to Brisbane because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions on sport in Victoria. Richmond defeated Geelong 12.9 (81) to 7.8 (50) at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly called the Gabba.
The match was also the first AFL Grand Final played at night. Richmond trailed early but took control after half-time, winning by 31 points.
The Gabba is the home ground of the Brisbane Lions and Queensland cricket. Its selection made the 2020 decider a major departure from the long-standing tradition of holding the Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
