Which club won the 2004 AFL premiership, its first since entering the national competition?

The story behind the answer

Port Adelaide won the 2004 AFL premiership, its first since entering the national competition.

Port Adelaide defeated the Brisbane Lions by 40 points in the 2004 AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Port scored 17.11 (113), while Brisbane managed 10.13 (73).

The premiership was Port Adelaide’s first at AFL level after the club joined the national competition in 1997. Port had a long and successful history in South Australian football, including numerous South Australian National Football League premierships, but had not yet won an AFL flag.

By defeating Brisbane, Port also ended the Lions’ attempt to win a fourth consecutive premiership. Byron Pickett won the Norm Smith Medal, and coach Mark Williams guided the club to its breakthrough national championship.
