Who won the 2023 Brownlow Medal as the AFL’s fairest and best player?

The story behind the answer

Lachie Neale won the 2023 Brownlow Medal as the AFL’s fairest and best player.

Neale received 31 votes at the 2023 Brownlow Medal count, finishing ahead of Gold Coast’s Touk Miller and Collingwood’s Nick Daicos. He was representing the Brisbane Lions, where he played as an inside midfielder and served as co-captain.

The award was Neale’s second Brownlow Medal. He had previously won in 2020 while playing for Brisbane, making him one of the relatively small number of players to win the medal more than once.

The Brownlow Medal is voted on by the field umpires after each home-and-away match. Players can be ineligible because of suspension, so the award is not simply a statistical leaderboard. Neale’s 2023 win recognised his season before Brisbane reached that year’s Grand Final.
