Who voiced the Jetsons' dog Astro?

The story behind the answer

Don Messick voiced Astro in The Jetsons. His performance made the family’s Great Dane one of Hanna-Barbera’s most recognizable talking pets, especially through Astro’s distinctive habit of turning many initial consonants into an “R” sound.

Messick was a prolific Hanna-Barbera voice actor who also played characters including Scooby-Doo, Boo-Boo Bear, Ranger Smith, and R.U.D.I. His connection with Astro lasted beyond the original 1962–1963 prime-time series: he reprised the role in later Jetsons productions, including The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, Rockin’ with Judy Jetson, and Jetsons: The Movie.

A common mix-up is Frank Welker, who voiced Astro in some later productions, including The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! Welker’s later credit does not change the canonical answer for the original television character. Astro is also sometimes confused with Scooby-Doo because both were voiced by Messick and use similarly expressive, speech-impaired comic delivery.
