Who voiced Mater in Pixar's Cars film series?

The story behind the answer

Larry the Cable Guy voiced Mater in Pixar's Cars film series.

Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs and Lightning McQueen's closest friend. His country humor, enthusiasm, and loyalty make him one of the franchise's most recognizable characters.

Larry the Cable Guy is the stage name of comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney. The character's voice uses the comedian's familiar Southern-influenced comic style, helping distinguish Mater from the more polished racing characters.

Mater has a much larger role in Cars 2, where his accidental involvement in an international espionage plot drives the story. This expanded role sometimes leads viewers to associate the character mainly with the sequel, but he was introduced in the original 2006 film. Owen Wilson, by contrast, voices Lightning McQueen.
