Who sired Spike?

The story behind the answer

Spike was sired by Drusilla. Before becoming a vampire, Spike was William Pratt, a sensitive but unsuccessful Victorian poet living in London. After being rejected by Cecily, he encountered Drusilla, who comforted him, drank his blood, and had him drink from her, transforming him into a vampire.

Drusilla had herself been sired by Angelus after he psychologically destroyed her life and drove her insane. That makes Angelus Spike’s grandsire and explains why Spike sometimes describes Angelus as the vampire who made him a monster, even though Drusilla performed the actual siring.

Spike and Drusilla became lovers and traveled with Angelus and Darla. In 1880, Spike adopted the identity “William the Bloody” and began his career as a vampire. The Master and Darla belong to the same vampire lineage, while Angelus was Spike’s mentor and grandsire, not his direct sire. This family relationship is one of the series’ recurring vampire-lore details.
