What is Buffy Summers's middle name?

The story behind the answer

Buffy Summers’s middle name is Anne.

Her full name is Buffy Anne Summers, although the series almost always calls her simply Buffy. The middle name becomes especially visible in the season-three premiere, “Anne,” when Buffy has left Sunnydale and works in Los Angeles under that name.

In the episode, Buffy is emotionally overwhelmed after the events of season two, including Angel’s apparent death, Kendra’s death, her expulsion from school, and her conflict with her mother. She takes a waitress job and uses “Anne” as part of her attempt to abandon her Slayer identity.

The name also passes to Lily, formerly known as Chanterelle, after Buffy returns to Sunnydale. Lily later works with runaway teenagers under the name Anne Steele. This can create confusion because “Anne” is both Buffy’s middle name and an identity used by another Buffyverse character. Faith, Dawn, and Joyce are important characters connected to Buffy, but none is her middle name.
