Who produced Johnny Cash's American Recordings series?

The story behind the answer

Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash’s American Recordings series. Rubin, a co-founder of Def Jam Recordings and founder of American Recordings, began working with Cash when the singer’s commercial momentum had significantly declined. Their collaboration produced a stark, intimate sound centered on Cash’s voice and acoustic guitar.

The first album, American Recordings, was released in 1994 and became a critical success. Rubin’s stripped-down approach allowed Cash to perform songs by contemporary writers alongside traditional material, helping introduce his work to a new generation. The partnership continued through albums including Unchained, Solitary Man, The Man Comes Around, American V: A Hundred Highways, and American VI: Ain’t No Grave.

The series is sometimes confused with the American Recordings label itself. Rubin founded and headed that label, but his role went beyond executive oversight: he directly produced the Cash sessions. Bob Johnston, Don Law, and Quincy Jones were influential producers elsewhere in music, but none produced Cash’s American series.
