What 1986 album reunited Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison? The answer is Class of '55.
Class of '55: Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming is a 1986 collaborative studio album by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. America/Smash Records released it on May 26, 1986, with Chips Moman producing. The sessions took place in Memphis in September 1985.
The project celebrated the four performers' shared beginnings at Sun Records in the 1950s. Although often described as a tribute to Elvis Presley, its main focus was the musical generation that helped establish rockabilly, country-rock and early rock 'n' roll in Memphis.
The album nearly lost Cash's contributions because he was still under contract to Columbia Records. Moman reportedly paid Columbia $100,000 to secure permission to retain Cash's vocals. The participants had already reunited in smaller combinations as the Million Dollar Quartet in 1956, making Class of '55 a later full-circle meeting.
A spoken-word companion, "Interviews from the Class of '55 Recording Sessions," won the 1986 Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album.
