Which 1971 Johnny Cash song explained why he wore dark clothing?

The story behind the answer

“Man in Black” is the 1971 Johnny Cash song that explained why he wore dark clothing.

Cash wrote and recorded the protest song for his 1971 album Man in Black. By then, his all-black stage wardrobe had already made “the Man in Black” his defining nickname. The song turns that visual identity into a social statement rather than treating it as merely a fashion choice.

Its lyrics say the black clothing represents poor and hungry people, prisoners, the sick, the lonely and others neglected by society. Cash also connected the color with mourning for lives lost in the Vietnam War. The song therefore explains his public image through empathy and protest, while also acknowledging that he simply liked wearing black.

Cash did not always dress exclusively in black early in his career. He later said matching black shirts were practical when touring, and black was easier to keep looking clean. The song is also distinct from “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” another major Cash recording whose subject is loneliness and regret, not the reason for his clothing.
