Which Johnny Cash live album includes his hit version of 'A Boy Named Sue'?

The story behind the answer

Johnny Cash’s live album At San Quentin includes his hit version of “A Boy Named Sue.”

Cash recorded the album at San Quentin State Prison in California on February 24, 1969, and Columbia released it on June 16 that year. It was his second live prison album, following At Folsom Prison, and it became a landmark recording in his career. The album reached No. 1 on both the U.S. country-album and pop-album charts.

“A Boy Named Sue” was written by poet and songwriter Shel Silverstein. Cash performed it spontaneously during the concert, using a lyric sheet while the band improvised behind him. The lively performance became the album’s best-known track and won Cash the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

The main confusion is with At Folsom Prison, another famous Cash prison album recorded in 1968. Folsom contains “Folsom Prison Blues,” while the San Quentin recording introduced Cash’s live version of “A Boy Named Sue.” The song later peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the country chart.
