Who made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Edmund Hillary made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay on 29 May 1953.

Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer and beekeeper who joined the British expedition led by John Hunt. He and Tenzing reached the summit via the South Col route, transforming both climbers into international figures.

The pair’s achievement is often described as the first ascent because no earlier successful summit had been confirmed. George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared on Everest in 1924, and whether they reached the summit remains unresolved. Hillary later devoted much of his life to supporting Himalayan communities through the Himalayan Trust.
