Which Himalayan pass, at about 5,883 metres, is often described as the world’s highest motorable pass?

The story behind the answer

Umling La is the Himalayan pass often described as the world’s highest motorable pass, at about 5,883 metres.

The pass lies in eastern Ladakh, India, near the Line of Actual Control with China. A road across it connects the villages of Hanle and Demchok and was built by the Border Roads Organisation.

Umling La became widely known after the road was opened to vehicles in 2021. The title “world’s highest motorable road” can vary by definition, because some routes are temporary, seasonal, or only accessible to specialised vehicles. Khardung La, Nathu La, and Rohtang Pass are famous Himalayan passes, but they are lower.
