Who is the St. Louis Rams running back on the Madden NFL 2003 cover?

The story behind the answer

The St. Louis Rams running back on the Madden NFL 2003 cover is Marshall Faulk.

Madden NFL 2003 was released in 2002 and featured Faulk during the height of his career with the Rams. He was the centerpiece of St. Louis’s explosive “Greatest Show on Turf” offense, combining elite rushing, receiving, and pass-protection ability. His all-around role made him one of the defining players of the early-2000s NFL.

This edition was the thirteenth installment in the Madden series and introduced or emphasized several notable features, including EA Trax and Mini Camp mode. It also marked Al Michaels’s debut as the game’s play-by-play announcer, taking over from Pat Summerall. The cover athlete is sometimes confused with Barry Sanders, another famous running back who appeared on an earlier Madden cover, or Eddie George, who fronted Madden NFL 2001. Faulk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
