Which Electronic Arts founder conceived the Madden NFL series?
Answer
Trip Hawkins
Answer
Trip Hawkins
Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins conceived the Madden NFL series.
Hawkins founded Electronic Arts in 1982 after working at Apple, with the ambition of turning complex tabletop games into computer experiences. His interest in football simulations dated back to his fascination with Strat-O-Matic Football, a paper-and-dice game that required players to perform extensive calculations manually.
In 1984, Hawkins approached former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden to endorse and advise on a realistic football simulation. Madden’s insistence on authenticity helped shape the project, and the two sides worked through football strategy and play design before the first John Madden Football appeared in 1988.
The other choices were later EA leaders, not the originator of the series. Larry Probst became a major EA executive and CEO, while Andrew Wilson and John Riccitiello led the company in later eras. The franchise was named for Madden, but its creation was initiated by Hawkins and EA.
