Madden NFL 17 was the last Madden game to use the Ignite engine.
Ignite was EA’s cross-sports game engine used in several major titles during the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation. Madden NFL 17 used Ignite on those newer consoles, while its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions used the older Infinity 2 engine.
The change came with Madden NFL 18, which became the first Madden entry developed with EA’s Frostbite engine. Frostbite had already become prominent in other EA franchises, and its adoption brought the Madden series into the company’s newer technology framework.
A related source of confusion is that Madden NFL 17 used more than one engine depending on platform. Saying “Ignite” is correct for the game’s PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, and the series-level statement remains accurate because Madden NFL 17 was the final Madden release associated with Ignite. It was released on August 23, 2016, with Rob Gronkowski on the cover.
