The Pro Football Hall of Fame coach whose name appears in the Madden NFL series is John Madden.
Madden was an NFL coach, broadcaster, and teacher of football whose expertise shaped the game from its earliest design. He coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, winning Super Bowl XI after the 1976 season, and finished his coaching career with an exceptional regular-season record. He later became one of American television’s best-known football commentators.
Electronic Arts originally released the series as John Madden Football. The name reflected more than celebrity endorsement: Madden insisted that the simulation represent real football, including 11 players per side rather than a simplified format. His football knowledge helped guide the playbooks, terminology, and instructional material included with the early game.
The series adopted the Madden NFL title in 1993 as the relationship between EA, Madden, and the National Football League developed. Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. A frequent mix-up is assuming the title refers to a player; Madden was primarily celebrated as a coach and broadcaster, although he had played college football before entering coaching.
