Who is the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series?

The story behind the answer

Masahiro Sakurai is the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series. While working at HAL Laboratory, he conceived the idea for a multiplayer fighting game featuring recognizable Nintendo characters and directed the original Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64.

Sakurai first developed a prototype called Dragon King: The Fighting Game. The early version used generic fighters, but the project changed dramatically when Nintendo characters were proposed. Sakurai and Satoru Iwata worked on the prototype and presented it to Nintendo, where the concept eventually received approval.

Satoru Iwata was an important collaborator and producer, while Shigeru Miyamoto helped approve the use of Nintendo’s characters. Neither is generally credited as the series creator. Reggie Fils-Aimé was a Nintendo executive and public-facing company leader, not the game’s designer. Sakurai later directed Melee, Brawl, the 3DS/Wii U entries, and Ultimate, reinforcing his canonical role as the series’ creator and principal creative figure.
