Which handheld system received the first portable Super Smash Bros. game?

The Nintendo 3DS received the first portable Super Smash Bros. game. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched in Japan on September 13, 2014, ahead of its October release in North America and Europe.

It was developed alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but the two versions were separate games with different stages and some distinct modes. The 3DS edition adapted the series' arena fighting for a smaller screen and included the handheld-exclusive Smash Run mode.

The common mix-up is Nintendo DS: that system received no original Super Smash Bros. release. Game Boy Advance and PlayStation Vita also never hosted a Smash game. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a Wii title, so the 3DS marked the franchise's first appearance on a portable system.
