Who hosted the first series of the BBC television show Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

Evan Davis hosted the first series of the BBC television show Dragons' Den.

Davis is a British economist, journalist and broadcaster who became familiar to viewers through BBC radio and television. Before Dragons' Den, he was best known for presenting business and economic coverage, including work on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

The UK version of Dragons' Den began in 2005 and was adapted from the Japanese format Money Tigers. Davis presented the opening series before the programme developed its long-running presentation style under later hosts.

He is sometimes confused with the show's Dragons because he appeared prominently in the pitch room, but Davis was the presenter rather than an investor. The Dragons evaluated business proposals, while the host introduced the entrepreneurs and guided the negotiations.
