Who directed the 2009 zombie comedy Zombieland?

The story behind the answer

Ruben Fleischer directed the 2009 zombie comedy Zombieland.

Zombieland was Fleischer’s feature-film directorial debut. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the screenplay, combining road-movie comedy, horror violence and a rule-based survival premise. Jesse Eisenberg plays Columbus, Woody Harrelson plays Tallahassee, Emma Stone plays Wichita and Abigail Breslin plays Little Rock.

The story follows the four travelers across a United States devastated by a zombie outbreak. Columbus’s numbered survival rules provide the film’s recurring comic structure, while Tallahassee’s search for a particular snack becomes one of its running jokes.

Fleischer later directed films including 30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad and Venom. A frequent mix-up is attributing Zombieland to Edgar Wright, whose zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead was released in 2004 and influenced the wider modern zombie-comedy wave.
