Who directed the 2002 film Resident Evil?

The story behind the answer

Paul W. S. Anderson directed the 2002 film Resident Evil.

Resident Evil was the first feature-film adaptation of Capcom’s video-game series of the same name. Anderson also wrote the screenplay, shaping a story about Alice, an amnesiac security specialist, and a team sent into an underground research facility after a deadly biological accident. The film combines science-fiction horror, action, and zombie conventions rather than closely retelling one game’s plot.

Milla Jovovich plays Alice, the film’s original central character, while Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, and James Purefoy appear in supporting roles. The setting includes the Hive, a secret laboratory beneath Raccoon City, where the artificial intelligence known as the Red Queen controls the facility.

The movie’s zombies are created after the T-virus reanimates dead tissue. That fictional virus and the Umbrella Corporation became recurring elements in the subsequent film series. Anderson later directed several more entries, including Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
