Which actor plays Shaun’s stepfather Philip in Shaun of the Dead?

Bill Nighy plays Shaun’s stepfather Philip in Shaun of the Dead.

Philip is the stern, emotionally reserved stepfather of Shaun, played by Simon Pegg. Their strained relationship is established before the zombie outbreak, when Philip criticizes Shaun’s habits and urges him to take greater responsibility. The crisis later reveals a more complicated bond between them, giving the comedy an unexpectedly sincere emotional thread.

Shaun of the Dead was released in 2004 and was directed by Edgar Wright from a screenplay he co-wrote with Pegg. Nick Frost plays Shaun’s best friend Ed, while Kate Ashfield plays Shaun’s girlfriend Liz. The film mixes romantic comedy, British sitcom-style humor, and zombie horror, and it helped popularize the label “rom-zom-com” for romantic zombie comedies.

Bill Nighy’s later genre work includes roles in Underworld and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, but Philip is a comparatively grounded character. Shaun of the Dead also contains visual and dialogue references to earlier zombie films, especially the works of George A. Romero, while remaining an original story set in contemporary London.
