Who created the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series?

The story behind the answer

Who created the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series? Joss Whedon. He created the television series and served as its executive producer and, for its first five seasons, its showrunner.

Whedon's television concept grew from his dissatisfaction with the lighter tone of the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film, which he wrote. For television, he returned to the idea of a young woman confronting supernatural dangers and developed high-school horror as a metaphor for adolescent fears.

Gail Berman helped bring the television project forward through Sandollar Television, while Fran and Kaz Kuzui retained important rights connected to the film. Marti Noxon and David Greenwalt became major writers and producers, but neither is credited as the series creator.

The series follows Buffy Summers, a Slayer who battles vampires and demons in Sunnydale, a town built over a mystical Hellmouth. Whedon's creation eventually ran for seven seasons and 144 episodes, moving from The WB to UPN for its final two seasons.
