J.K. Rowling places Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Scotland in the Harry Potter series. Hogwarts is the boarding school attended by Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and many other young witches and wizards.
The school is hidden from Muggles, the series’ term for people without magical ability. Its grounds include the castle, the Forbidden Forest, the Great Lake, and the Quidditch pitch. Students generally travel to Hogwarts by the Hogwarts Express, which departs from Platform 9¾ at London’s King’s Cross station.
Hogwarts is divided into four houses named after its founders: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Rowling’s books do not give a precise ordinary-world address for the school, because concealment is part of its magical protection. Scotland is the established national location, distinguishing Hogwarts from other schools such as Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.
