Which Winter Olympics introduced curling as an official medal sport in 1998?

The story behind the answer

The Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics introduced curling as an official medal sport.

Curling had appeared at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix in 1924, but its early Olympic status was later disputed and it disappeared from the main program. The sport returned as a demonstration event at Calgary in 1988 and Albertville in 1992.

At Nagano, men’s and women’s curling competitions were officially contested for medals. Switzerland won the men’s tournament, while Canada won the women’s tournament. Curling’s Olympic format later expanded to include mixed doubles, which made its debut at Pyeongchang in 2018.

A frequent mistake is saying curling first appeared at Nagano. It was present in 1924, but Nagano was the edition that restored it as a full official medal sport after decades outside the core program.
