Which Wii game in the series was released in Japan on January 31, 2008?

The story behind the answer

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the Wii game in the series released in Japan on January 31, 2008.

Brawl was the third main entry in the Super Smash Bros. series and followed Super Smash Bros. Melee. Nintendo originally planned a 2007 release, but development delays pushed the Japanese launch into early 2008. It later arrived in North America on March 9, 2008, and in Europe and Australia that June.

The Wii entry expanded Smash with a larger roster, third-party playable characters, online battles through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and the story-driven Subspace Emissary adventure mode. It was also the first game in the series to include characters such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog.

The other options belong to different consoles or release periods. Melee was a GameCube game, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was released in 2014, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched for Nintendo Switch in 2018.
