J.K. Rowling launched Pottermore in 2011 as an interactive hub for the Harry Potter world.
The website offered digital versions of the novels, interactive experiences and new writing by Rowling about the wizarding world. Its early experience guided users through illustrated moments from the books and allowed them to be sorted into a Hogwarts house and receive a wand.
Pottermore was created with Sony and opened publicly in 2012 after an earlier limited period. It also became an important channel for digital Harry Potter publishing, especially because Rowling supplied additional background material not included in the original novels.
In 2019, Pottermore’s editorial and interactive content moved under the Wizarding World brand. The website’s name is therefore historical, while WizardingWorld.com became the principal online home for the franchise.
