J.K. Rowling launched Pottermore in 2011 as an interactive website for Harry Potter fans.
Pottermore combined digital editions of the books with interactive features, including sorting into a Hogwarts house, wand selection and additional writing by Rowling. The site opened to a limited number of users in 2011 before becoming widely available in 2012.
Rowling used the platform to publish background information that was not included in the original novels. Visitors could explore illustrated moments from the books and read material about characters, magical history and the Wizarding World.
In 2019, Pottermore Publishing was created as the digital publishing arm of the Wizarding World franchise. The main website was later replaced by WizardingWorld.com, which became the broader official online destination. Thus, Pottermore is the name associated with the original interactive site launched by Rowling.
