J.K. Rowling taught English in Portugal before returning to Britain.
After moving to Porto in 1991, Rowling worked as an English teacher at the Encounter English School. She had previously studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter, so her teaching subject was English rather than the subjects of her degree.
During her time in Portugal, she married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes. Their daughter Jessica was born in 1993. Rowling later returned to the United Kingdom, settling in Edinburgh, where she continued developing the Harry Potter manuscript.
Biographical summaries sometimes blur her university studies and her teaching work. French and Classics describes her degree, while English describes the subject she taught in Portugal. Keeping those two stages separate is essential to identifying the correct answer.
