Which university did J.K. Rowling attend before working in Portugal as an English teacher?

J.K. Rowling attended the University of Exeter before working in Portugal as an English teacher.

She studied French and Classics at Exeter and graduated in 1986. Her knowledge of languages and classical subjects later contributed to the naming of characters, spells, and places in the Harry Potter books, although the novels also draw on many other cultural and linguistic sources.

After university, Rowling worked in various jobs, including positions connected with Amnesty International and Manchester. She moved to Porto, Portugal, in 1991 and taught English there. During this period she married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes and had her first child, Jessica.

Rowling began developing Harry Potter before and during this part of her life. She later moved to Edinburgh, where she continued writing. The University of Exeter is therefore an important part of her biography, but it was not the university where she studied creative writing.
