Which university did J.K. Rowling attend after completing school?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling attended the University of Exeter after completing school.

She studied French and Classics at Exeter and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. Her French studies later informed parts of her writing and public life, while her interest in classical languages and mythology contributed to the names and ideas used throughout the Harry Potter books.

Before university, Rowling attended Wyedean School and College in Gloucestershire. After graduating from Exeter, she worked in several administrative and research roles, including employment with Amnesty International. She later moved to Portugal, where she taught English and married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes.

Rowling’s university experience is sometimes confused with the University of Oxford or the University of Edinburgh because both cities and universities are strongly associated with British literary culture. Exeter, however, is the institution named in biographical accounts of her undergraduate education. The university later awarded her an honorary doctorate.
