Which train route inspired J.K. Rowling’s idea for Harry Potter?

The story behind the answer

A train journey from Manchester to London inspired J.K. Rowling’s idea for Harry Potter.

Rowling has said that the initial idea for Harry Potter came to her during a delayed train journey from Manchester to London in 1990. She imagined a boy who did not know he was a wizard, and characters and details began forming in her mind during the trip.

The journey became part of the series’ origin story, although the finished books were developed over several years. Rowling began writing after the idea arrived and worked on the first novel while living in Portugal, Edinburgh, and elsewhere. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was eventually published in 1997.

A common mix-up is to identify the route as London to Edinburgh, because Edinburgh is strongly associated with Rowling’s writing career and the books’ atmosphere. Edinburgh was important to the manuscript’s later development, but the famous initial idea is linked to the Manchester–London train journey.
