Natural Bridge Caverns
Answer
Natural Bridge Caverns
Natural Bridge Caverns was discovered in Texas by four college students in 1960.
On March 27, 1960, Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell Jr., Al Brandt and Joe Cantu—students at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio—entered the cave system beneath land near the city. Their exploration revealed the extensive cavern later developed as Natural Bridge Caverns.
The site takes its name from the roughly 60-foot natural limestone bridge spanning the entrance amphitheatre. Groundwater slowly dissolved limestone and helped create the caverns’ stalactites, stalagmites and other calcite formations. The cave remains about 21°C year-round, with very high humidity.
Development began in 1963, and the attraction opened to visitors on July 3, 1964. It is not the same site as Inner Space Cavern or the smaller Cascade Caverns. Natural Bridge Caverns became a National Natural Landmark in 1971 and is now one of Texas’s best-known commercial cave attractions.
