The Jenolan Caves are in which Australian state?

The story behind the answer

The Jenolan Caves are in New South Wales, Australia. They lie in the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve in the Central Tablelands, within Oberon Council, west of the Blue Mountains and roughly 175 kilometres from Sydney.

Jenolan is one of Australia’s best-known limestone cave systems. More than 40 kilometres of passages and over 300 entrances have been identified, although only selected sections are developed for regular guided visits. Eleven show caves have been prepared for tourism, including Lucas Cave, River Cave and Chifley Cave.

The area also has a long human and scientific history. Local Gundungurra and Wiradjuri peoples have longstanding cultural connections to the region. European discovery is usually dated to 1838 and attributed to James Whalan, although some historical accounts suggest 1841. The caves were originally called the Fish River Caves and were placed under New South Wales government control in 1866. Their state is sometimes confused with Victoria or Tasmania because all three also have famous Australian cave destinations.
