Kents Cavern is in which English seaside town?

The story behind the answer

Kents Cavern is in Torquay, an English seaside town in Devon.

The cave system lies beneath the Torquay area on England’s south coast and formed in Devonian limestone. Its passages and chambers were shaped largely by groundwater, making it both a geological site and an important archaeological location.

Kents Cavern has a long history of excavation. Torquay Natural History Society investigations began in the 1840s, and later work by William Pengelly helped strengthen the nineteenth-century case for the great antiquity of human occupation. Finds from the cave include animal remains, stone tools and human fossils.

The cavern has been open as a visitor attraction for generations. It became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1952 and a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1957. The name is sometimes written “Kent’s Cavern,” but that spelling difference does not change the town: Torquay, not Blackpool, Scarborough or Brighton.
