On which Greek island is the Cave of the Apocalypse?

The story behind the answer

The Cave of the Apocalypse is on the Greek island of Patmos.

According to Christian tradition, the cave is where John of Patmos received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation. Patmos lies in the Dodecanese, in the Aegean Sea, and the grotto sits roughly between the port of Skala and the hilltop settlement of Chora.

The cave is part of a religious complex associated with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. Visitors see a rock cleft traditionally linked with John's revelation, along with a small chapel and other devotional features. The site is a major destination for Christian pilgrims.

A common mix-up is confusing the cave's island with the nearby larger islands of Rhodes or Crete. In 1999, UNESCO listed the historic centre of Chora, the monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse together as a World Heritage Site.
